In 2009 the Hawthorn Football Club launched HANZ-UP!, a New Zealand community-based football program.
The alliance formed between Hawthorn and AFLNZ will see the Hawks promote AFL football in New Zealand through a variety of activities including KiwiKick, the Hawks Cup, the Trent Croad Scholarship Scheme and annual clinics with Hawks players

Thursday, May 19, 2011 - Rhys' new no.1 sport
Hawthorn recently played host to International Scholarship holder Rhys Panui-Leth and his parents Luke and Marion as the youngster undertook testing and skills training with the Hawks.
On a trans-Tasman visit to Waverley Park, the 16-year old New Zealand native chronicled his involvement with the Hawks thus-far.

AFTER starring in Hawthorn's comeback defeat of St Kilda on Sunday, New Zealander Shane Savage has earned a nomination for the NAB AFL Rising Star.
Savage was nominated for his 26 possessions and five tackles in Sunday's win.

The programme is designed for kids aged from 5 upwards and aims to give New Zealand kids a look at what AFL is all about. Hawks Active will be promoted at all AFL KiwiKick centres and will look to improve on a growing affinity Kiwi kids have with their newly adopted sport.

Monday, November 29, 2010 - Hawks take on New Zealand
Australian Rules Football (AFL) team, the Hawthorn Hawks, will arrive in New Zealand this Thursday on a five day high-altitude adventure training camp.
The entire Hawks playing squad and coaches will touch down in Christchurch, New Zealand, before making their way to the Mount Cook vicinity, one of the Country’s most picturesque and elevated training locations.

The players will be put through high-intensity physical activity, including mountain bike riding, high-altitude running and hiking and white water rafting. The players will also focus on team building activities, before finishing off their five-day camp with some community visits to local schools.

Wednesday, October 20, 2010 - Hawthorn Talent Testing in New Zealand
As part of the HANZ UP! affiliation between Hawthorn Football Club and AFL New Zealand, Hawthorn will hold talent testing days through out New Zealand from October 29th to October 31st.
The testing will take place in the three major centres of Christchurch, Wellington and Auckland with athletes attending through invitations supplied through school visits and the Hawks Cup Secondary School competitions.

Tuesday, November 17, 2009 - Kurt Heatherley NZ's first International Scholarship
Kurt Heatherley became New Zealands first AFL International Scholarship holder when he was signed by the Hawthorn Football Club. He also becomes the first recepient of the Trent Croad Scholarship through the Hawks signing. Kurt will compete for the New Zealand Hawks Under 16 team at the Oceania Cup in Fiji December 2009 where the New Zealand team will gain exposure to a myriad of AFL scouts and hopefully further signings.

The newly formed partnership between AFL New Zealand and the Hawthorn Football Club now has a dedicated web page that will find its way to a massive Hawthorn membership base of over 50,000 people.
New Zealand has been provided with excellent pathways for those wishing to be associated with the game but awareness and marketing is the number one challenge. The current base of those involved with the game is tiny in comparison to 4,000,000 people yet to understand or be alerted of just how good the opportunities are with the sport.
