The programme initially provides free introductory sessions and resources presented by qualified AFL New Zealand employees to combine with either school curriculum or simply introduce a new and dynamic sport to students. The skills of ‘Kick, Catch, Pass and Bounce’ are perfectly matched to cross reference any number of sports.

The recent introduction of AFL into the New Zealand Secondary School Sports Council calendar provides all schools with the opportunity to participate in the Hawks Cup culminating in North Island and South Island Championships on November 6th and 7th 2010.
Last year the popular format of cluster tournaments were scheduled for a single day as an initial entry into competition and were organized in an ‘after school tournament format’ that runs for two hours to ensure both travel and time commitments are minimized.
We have included a form that can be utilized by schools and AFL New Zealand Hawks Cup coordinators to assist in ascertaining interest from students at your school.

AFL New Zealand is aware of the time and resource constrictions faced by schools and teachers. All teams that participate in the Hawks Cup will have coaching or management staff allocated from local clubs to provide links between school and community.
The Hawks Cup will provide participants with a link to local clubs as well as a High Performance pathway with opportunities to represent both New Zealand and Oceania at Under 15 levels. Up to three New Zealanders annually will be provided with the opportunity to participate in the Trent Croad Scholarship Programme as part of the HANZ UP! programme.
