The National Provincial Championships (NPC) are held annually to firstly determine the best Australian Football League in New Zealand and also to help select the New Zealand National teams.
2009 will see the emergence of an Under 20 competition to be held in Christchurch on the 14th and 15th of March. From this a youth talent identification programme will select an Under 20 Squad who will compete in the Senior championships later this year.
Over the past four years the senior event has been held in Christchurch September 2004, Auckland February 2006, Wellington September 2008 and this year the event will be held in Auckland or Waikato on the week end of October 24,25 and 26 2009.
In 2009 Waikato will compete in their fourth NPC carnival since the Leagues inception with the Waikato region continuing to provide representative players and showing the value of promotion of AFL within the region.
Auckland look to maintain their dominance in the competition and target their fourth successive victory.
Wellington (runner up 2004 and 2007) and Canterbury (runner up 2006) will also be looking to take the honours and become the 2009 National Champions.
