The National Provincial Championships (NPC) are held annually to firstly determine the best Australian Football League in New Zealand and also to help select the New Zealand National teams.

2009 saw the emergence of an Under 20 competition held in Christchurch on the 14th and 15th of March. From this now annually a youth talent identification programme a New Zealand Under 20 Squad is selected to compete against Victoria later that year.
2010 saw the Under 20 NPC tournament involve the NZ Under 16 team as well as three provinces. The sport continues to grow and provide opportunities for younger players.
The Senior tournaments are held over the Labour Day long weekend in October each year aith the tournament used to find the strongest provincial team in New Zealand as well as selecting a Senior New Zealand Hawks squad for Oceania and International Cup selection.
